English Department

  • Description:

    The department was founded in 2009. So far, eleven classes have graduated from the department. Many of them are now teaching in the public and private schools of the region; some others have got MA degree and teach in the universities, including university of Raparin. The department is currently running an MA joint programme in the field of linguistics and applied linguistics with English department/college of basic education at university of Raparin.

  • Our Mission:

    The mission of the English Language B.Ed. degree program at College of Education is to prepare students to become teachers of English at intermediate and secondary schools, to be able to communicate and interact with others in the global community effectively, and to pursue advanced studies in the field of English language teaching, linguistics, and literature. To achieve this, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts and skills of English language teaching, linguistics, and literature.

     
  • Learning Outcomes:

    By the end of this program, students will be able to: • Define the key terms and concepts associated with the English language teaching, linguistics and literature. • Use the English language to express and communicate ideas in a written and oral manner, both in academic and nonacademic settings. • Discuss the fundamental principles of the English language teaching, linguistics and literature. • Teach English as a subject in MoE schools (intermediate and secondary levels) in a manner that promotes students' learning and development. • Use modern and innovative pedagogical approaches (such as learner-centered approach) and technologies to enhance teaching and learning in the English language. • Apply effective methods of assessment and feedback to improve the learning of English as a subject in MoE schools. • Analyse the different and individual needs of students in the class and cater for these needs by using appropriate teaching approaches. • Plan the module content, learning activities, and assessment tasks in the English language. • Apply research methodologies to conduct research, and collect and analyse information and data in the English language teaching, linguistics and literature. • Differentiate between the different genres of texts in the English language (such as fiction, poetry, and drama) and the genres of discourse (such as informal and formal genres). • Analyze the different linguistic features of texts in the English language (such as lexical items, grammatical constructions, and sentence patterns). • Identify the major literary works and their authors in English literature.
